Patient Educational Photos: Before/After Reconstructive/Plastic Surgery

Treating Plastic Surgeon: Dr Greg Morrison

The following cases and accompanying photos are actual patients with skin cancer who were treated by plastic surgeon Dr. Greg Morrison. Brief case descriptions with before and after photos of each patient are presented here for educational purposes. (All patients discussed and pictured here have given permission for this educational use of their clinical information.)

Also included below is a guide on what to look for download file in recognizing the three main skin cancers basal cell, squamous cell, and melanoma.

Last, but not least, also included here are certain recommendations on the care of incisions and new scars download file, examples of some of the educational materials, that all my patients receive.

Case # 1

This woman had a facial (temple) skin lesion that first appears to be a melanoma. However, on biopsy it turned out to be a basal cell carcinoma. As an outpatient she underwent local anesthesia combined with IV sedation (to quell high anxiety). Dr. Greg Morrison then performed complete excision, confirmed by immediate “frozen section” pathological examination, and plastic-reconstructive skin flap repair of the defect. (A one hour procedure)

She is doing well and is pleased with her plastic-reconstructive surgery.

Shown here are a pre-op picture and a post-op picture taken just one month after the procedure.

CASE # 2

This woman’s hand shows a “classic” appearance of a squamous cell skin cancer. As an outpatient she underwent local anesthesia and had biopsy, complete excision, immediate “frozen section” pathological exam, and a plastic-reconstructive skin graft, performed by Dr. Greg Morrison. (A one hour procedure)

The patient is happy with the developing appearance of her scar.

Shown here are the pre-op pic and a post-op pic taken two months after operation.

CASE # 3

This man has a history of prior skin cancer. The pre-op picture shows a new, 1 centimeter basal cell carcinoma lesion (confirmed by biopsy) on his right cheek, irritated by daily shaving.

Under local anesthesia, and as an outpatient, he underwent complete excision with immediate, “frozen section” exam, and plastic-reconstructive skin flap closure of the defect. The operation (one hour procedure) was performed by Dr. Greg Morrison.

Pictured here are the lesion pre-op and a post-op healing incision three weeks after. He is very pleased with the result.

Note: The above skin cancer surgical operations are plastic-reconstructive procedures, performed by Dr. Greg Morrison, an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. All such plastic-reconstructive operations are completely covered by routine medical/health insurance plans. Also included are post-op care and patient educational materials.

A frequently asked question: "Should I have a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon remove my skin cancer?" Answer: Both the dermatologist and plastic surgeon are specially trained in skin cancer. For larger lesions (tumors) or more extensive disease a plastic surgeon should be consulted. In any case, some patients, for cosmetic concerns, may feel more at ease with biopsy, removal, and plastic reconstruction performed by a plastic surgeon.

Case # 4

Notice the round, crater-like lesion in the corner of this man’s right eye. This is a basal cell skin carcinoma. Under “twilight” anesthesia he underwent biopsy, total excision confirmed by frozen section exam, and a plastic-reconstructive skin graft. This one-hour procedure was performed by Dr. Greg Morrison.

The “after” photo shows the patient only six weeks after operation, and this early result is increasingly pleasing.

Case # 5

Note Well: For women the lower leg is most often the site of melanoma and indeed this patient has such a lesion on her leg. Dr. Morrison performed a wide excision of this skin cancer and reconstructed the area with a skin graft. The result at two months is also shown here.

Case # 6

Note well: For men the back is most often the site of melanoma and indeed this patient has such a lesion on his back. Dr. Morrison performed a wide excision of this skin cancer and reconstructed the area with the use of skin flaps involving nearby skin. The result at two months is also shown here.

(Surgeon's note: This online photo gallery dedicated to skin cancer patients (started in 10/06) is the first of its kind in Ohio, and one of only a very few worldwide. The cases presented here are not spectacular in terms of huge tumor size, or unusually complicated reconstruction. Instead you should view these cases as examples of everyday or routine skin cancer treated with plastic surgery. I hope my past, present, and future patients find this gallery and website information helpful, and will forward to me suggestions on how to make it better!--GEM )
